
As another great representative season wraps up in Newcastle, we celebrate the outstanding individuals who have gone above and beyond across our programs. From referees to players, coaches, managers, and volunteers, these awards recognise the heart and soul of our basketball community.
The following awards were presented at our Junior and Senior Presentation Nights.
SCOTT BEKER JUNIOR REFEREE OF THE YEAR
Winner: Lyla Nardo
Lyla is a rising star in the junior referee ranks. Committed to both domestic and representative games, her consistency and professionalism earned her key officiating roles this year, including the U14 Boys EJL Grand Final and the State Cup. Her future in refereeing is bright.
KEN CLIFFORD SENIOR REFEREE OF THE YEAR
Winner: Scott Beker
Scott Beker has long been a valued and respected member of the referee community, both locally and internationally. In 2025, Scott continued to showcase his expertise by officiating numerous NBL1 games and representing Australia on the international stage at both the FIBA Women’s and Men’s Asia Cup. Scott’s passion for the game goes beyond the whistle, he is committed to mentoring and inspiring the next generation of referees.
ERIC HARVEY CLUB COACH OF THE YEAR
Winner: Alicia Macdougall
Alicia coached multiple teams throughout the season from U10’s through to U16’s. She leads with integrity and care, creating a supportive environment where players are encouraged to reach their potential. Alicia is a positive role model to the athletes she coaches, celebrating successes and bringing out the best in every athlete, from the quiet achievers to the more spirited competitors.
NEWCASTLE BASKETBALL VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR
Winner: Rachel Wherrett
Rachel has been the backbone of West Basketball Club for many years. Her unwavering dedication, exceptional organisational skills, and tireless work behind the scenes have created opportunities for thousands of children to step onto the court each week. As she steps back from her role, we recognise the incredible, long-standing impact she has made.
JOSH MORGAN AWARD – U12 BOYS PROGRAM
Winner: Wil Macdougall
Wil has consistently shown outstanding sportsmanship and a selfless, team-first mindset throughout the season. His defensive grit and unwavering work ethic set him apart not just in performance, but in the attitude and spirit he brought to every game. Wil gave his absolute best all season while proudly representing the Falcons.
RHONDA DAVIDSON MEMORIAL AWARD – U12 GIRLS PROGRAM
Winner: Romaea Melmeth
Romaea is a dedicated and hardworking young athlete whose focus and determination inspire her team. She consistently gives her best, supports and encourages teammates, and fosters a positive, welcoming environment that makes her a great asset to her team.
ELLIOT JAY MEMORIAL AWARD – U18 MENS PROGRAM
Winner: Jack Rumble
Jack lives and breathes basketball, always at training giving 100% rain, hail or shine. He has moved from another community to Newcastle to better his career and develop his game further. Jack leads on the court, always producing those one percent efforts. Jack was rewarded for his efforts this year, making the NSW Country State team.
CHRIS HADAWAY MEMORIAL AWARD – U18 GIRLS PROGRAM
Winner: Rose Bond
Rose has had an outstanding 2025 season, showcasing her determination, athleticism, and talent across all levels of competition. Her selection to represent the NSW Country team at the U18 Nationals highlights her individual excellence, while her involvement in the Senior Program, playing with both the NBL1 Women and Youth League squads, speaks volumes about her skill and maturity both on and off the court.
FALCONS MANAGER OF THE YEAR
Winner: Tegan Nardo
As Team Manager, Tegan handled the challenges of a demanding season with calm efficiency, warmth, and tireless energy. From travel logistics to team wellbeing, she made the job look effortless. Tegan’s contribution this year stands as a shining example of the impact that dedicated volunteers have on our teams and our community.
FALCONS COACH OF THE YEAR
Winner: Jonah Armstrong
Jonah Armstrong has had a standout year in 2025, serving as Head Coach of the U18 Girls Navy team and giving his time to the Youth League Women’s program. Under his guidance, the U18 Girls had a highly successful season, with Jonah’s calm, focused approach making a clear impact on and off the court.
FALCONS CLUB PERSON OF THE YEAR
Winner: Peta Rafty
Peta has been a tireless servant of the Falcons and Wests community As Chair of the Nomination Committee and a long-time manager of representative teams, Peta has played a key part in supporting and strengthening the Falcons program over the past decade. Her dedication, reliability, and passion have helped shape our association, making this a well-earned honour recognising her years of service.
