Newcastle Basketball Congratulates Life Members Catherine Baker and Garry Craig

Newcastle Basketball congratulates Catherine Baker and Garry Craig on being awarded Life Membership at this week’s Annual General Meeting, recognising their decades of extraordinary service to the basketball community.

Catherine Baker

Catherine Baker has dedicated over 50 years to the Newcastle Basketball community, making invaluable contributions as a player, coach, manager, referee, and club official.

Her leadership at Port Hunter Basketball Club has included roles as Registrar, Secretary, and President, during which she fostered opportunities for players of all ages, especially children and adolescents. Catherine has continually demonstrated her passion, organising fundraisers, club trips, and presentation days that have enriched the basketball experience for many.

Catherine continues to give back by coaching and mentoring her grandchildren and their teams in the local junior competition.

Garry Craig

Garry Craig has been an active member of the Newcastle Basketball community for over 50 years. He began as a junior player, representing Stockton Primary School’s State Championship team in 1966 and the Newcastle team in 1968.

In later years, he moved into coaching and administration, contributing to the Port Hunter Club from 1999 to 2021. During that time, he held roles including President, Secretary, and Treasurer, and regularly coached multiple teams.

A long-time supporter of Newcastle’s club system, Garry worked to maintain Port Hunter’s history and operations. He helped develop the club’s digital presence, improved communication processes, and coordinated the 50th Anniversary dinner and inaugural Hall of Fame in 2014.

His involvement reflects the Craig family’s ongoing connection to the local basketball community.
