Birthplace of
The NBL.

The origins of the NBL trace back to a simple idea shared among a few committed pioneers, and it was Newcastle’s ambition and leadership that transformed that idea into something far bigger than anyone imagined.

Newcastle’s basketball program is widely credited with sparking the creation of the National Basketball League. In 1978, Newcastle Basketball President John Raschke gathered ten representatives from across the country in an unused aircraft hangar at Sydney Airport. Their goal was simple but ambitious — to explore the formation of a true national competition that could lift the standard of the sport across Australia.

That meeting became the catalyst for the first NBL season. The nine other clubs paid a small fee of around $300 to Newcastle to enter the competition, cementing Newcastle’s role as the birthplace of the modern NBL.

When the inaugural season tipped off in 1979, the Newcastle Falcons took the court with a roster built entirely from local talent. The Falcons proudly represented the city in the league for two decades, competing until 1999 and leaving a legacy that still shapes Newcastle Basketball today.
